The Ultimate Guide to Vienna Shorts 2019

From May 28 to June 2, Vienna Shorts will be showing 305 films from 55 countries that aim to generate desire for short movies – whether it’s fiction or documentary or animated film. PW-Magazine recommends this year’s highlights!
Opening Ceremony
Vienna Shorts kicks off with six films and an homage to Agnès Varda, casting a rhythmic, humorous, courageous glance at the world, traveling here and there into the past to better understand the present and make a brighter future.
Alex Gerbaulet: In Person
»Tattooed Prisoners« and »Depth of Field« explore how right-wing slogans and actions have become inscribed in bodies and places in Germany. The multiple-award-winning »Shift« combines the search for traces of a more recent German history with the Alex Gerbaulet’s autobiographical narration, before our eyes are directed toward interiors and domestic violence in »The Sleeper«.
Utopias Are For Realists
What do we have that’s worth going for if not the idea of making the world a better place and to be champions of humans and humanity? From considered protest to futuristic concept, from clear pleas to joint action—let’s take up this battle for utopia!
Bjørn Melhus I – In Person
German video and installation artist Bjørn Melhus is interested in a critique not only of the superficial world of media and its influence on emotions and desires but also of capitalism and other promises of a better life.

Vienna Shorts’ international music video program offers a cross section of excellent music videos from the past year and raises the question of how the connection between image and sound can be made so attractive that both components offer an ideal space for development.

Michaela Grill, Karl Lemieux, and Philip Jeck’s audiovisual performance explores the line between analog and digital realms: Images and sounds are produced both analogically and digitally and are connected via several interfaces.

The short film panorama presented by French Académie des César and the Austrian Film Acadaemy includes 34 award-winning films. The marathon consists of five parts on two days, with ten minutes between them to take a breath. Free admission!
