The Femdex Podcast: DJ Hauswein

Femdex and PW-Magazine are collaborating on a series of podcasts and interviews to highlight female talent from Vienna and around the globe.

Artist Name: DJ Hauswein
Current Residence: Vienna
Label / Crew / Projects: Common Contact & I’ve Got My Period

Can you tell us about the ideas and inspirations behind this mix?

Jetlag, coffee, and PMS.

As far as you remember, what was your first song or band that you fell in love with when you were a kid or a teenager?

When I was probably five years old, my favourite track was »Dancin’ (On a Saturday Night)« by Barry Blue. I had my handlers record it from the radio on a tape, which I played a lot in the bath from a small colourful portable player that had a little microphone on the side so you could sing along. The drums on that song, the kind of hillbilly banjo vibes, and all the talk of amusement park rides had my eyes going colourful – I bathed a lot.

Do you remember your first encounter with electronic music and can you elaborate on that?

Hard to say, but one memorable encounter was the sounds of my young uncle Amjad, who was a McDonald’s employee at the time, playing »Bingo Bongo« by DJ Quicksilver and similar tracks when when he picked us up from school. Those rides were terrifying, hilarious, and always combined with a flurry of very 90s style vouchers for free fries, burgers, and milkshakes. Definitely made a positive lasting imprint.

Our last featured artist Rosa Anschütz would like to know how you established common contact as a collective in Vienna and what is your approach on club culture in general?

Thanks for the question, Rosa. First, I have to say that Common Contact is not a collective but a project that I do myself. I guess at that time I felt that there was room for more shows with the kind of sound that I wanted to hear. In that sense, it was a purely selfish endeavour - just trying to book shows with all sorts of styles I enjoy listening to. As for an approach, I don’t have one. Just dive in and see what you can get away with and be sure that you have a supportive community around you that will help you out. Thanks at this point to my # 1s DJ Angel and Fauna who always have my back and helped me so much, especially in the beginning.
