Pop-Kultur is an international festival, held from August 23 to 25 in 2017 at the Kulturbrauerei in Berlin. We recommend 6 artists you don’t want to miss.
Pop-Kultur’s first edition happened at the Berghain in 2015, the second one in the district of Neukölln in 2016. The festival focusses on three foundations: Live (music, …), its talent program and networking. It promotes visionary extentions within the various fields of production work with a special weight on the performance approach, internationality and sexual diversity.
The festival creates a discursive space for pop culture and especially pop music, allowing reflection, contextualization and celebration. Unintentionally last year’s and this year’s edition have been at the centre of two different debates. In 2016 Off-Kultur criticized Pop-Kultur’s focus and perceived importance. This year arab artists boycott the Pop-Kultur because of an alleged co-financing of the festival by the State of Israel. The festival organizers said in response to the cancellations: “We believe that discourse and dialogue are the only the way to deal with conflicts in this world. We, as artists, have the responsibility to build networks that go beyond borders, also when we have different opinions.”
Though there are many exceptional artists playing at Pop-Kultur which are not on this list, we recommend six artists you don’t want to miss:
